How do I enter my registered rights into the platform?

When building your IP profile, it's important to make sure that you note everything that relates to your bundle of assets, every intellectual asset, every patent, every trade mark and every design right. If you haven't registered any of your rights then there's nothing for you to include in the Registered Rights section of your IP profile. But you'd be surprised how many people forget to add something that they have registered, or don't think it's worth including.

It is!

Things you need to know...

Patents, trade marks and design rights require registration in every country, so if you have any of them for the IP you're profiling, you need to enter them.

Copyrights don't require registration in most countries, so they will be reflected toward the end of the platform in the Intellectual Assets section. Where they do require registration, you can enter them in your profile. The same goes for utility models and geographical indicators.

When entering the numbers into our platform, you need to enter the two-letter country code first, then the relevant number. If you're not sure what the country code is, you can find a list here.

Automatic entry

We have an automatic look-up facility for patents and trademarks. This means that if you have either right, you may only be required to enter the number, search for it, then confirm that the search has returned the correct right.

  1. Our automatic look-up uses the Espacenet database. If your patent is published or granted, and registered in one of the territories that Espacenet covers, it should be located by our look-up facility.
  2. If you have a family of patents, you will only need to enter one of the numbers associated with that patent to locate the entire family.
  3. Trade marks registered or applied for in the UK or the EU will be automatically retrieved.
  4. If you have registered trade marks under the Madrid protocol and therefore, have trade marks registered in several territories, you may note that some territories allocate separate numbers, whilst others replicate the Madrid protocol number. Those with separate numbers will need to be entered and searched for individually. Those with the same number can be entered with a single manual entry. See below.

Manual entry

If your patent is at an early stage, your patent and/or trade marks have been filed in areas not covered by our look-up facility, or you have design rights, you will need to enter the information manually.

You will only need to enter a few details. Then, if you decide to move forward to a valuation of your IP, you may need to provide us with documentation that confirms your entry.

When entering trade marks registered under the Madrid protocol that aren't assigned a unique number , you can make one entry to cover all the registrations with the same registration number, using 'WO' as the two-letter country code.
